19th century humanist portraits

Morocco in honor at the Arles festival –Les Baux de Provence. For its 14th edition, Morocco will be strongly represented at the Baux de Provence festival, directed by Bruno Rédarès. The Festival takes place from 08 at 18 May 2014.

The Maison de la Photographie de Marrakech presents around forty humanist portraits from the period 1880-1940,. 1839, Morocco is not an obligatory stage of the Grand Tour. The country remains a terra incognita. With the exception of the archaeological missions of Henri de La Martinière, Volubilis, in 1884 -1888, the first photographic workshops will be established from the years 1870 in Tetouan and Tangier: Cavilla, the Levys, are among the most prolific. Ethnography and exoticism are still mixed in a "Moroccan fascination". The Jewish community, more open, provides the opportunity for portraits of great interest where the eyes of the operators meet the eyes of the people photographed, the Arab population is more often the subject of indirect photographs: scenes and genre, landscapes ...
The photographs presented here under the title: "Multiple Morocco, land of sharing ”are therefore drawings of light, real iconographic treasures.

Photographic treasures

The Maison de la Photographie strives to show original photographs, all taken in Morocco between 1870 and 1950. These are often very rare views, which require a real archeology of the gaze.

Beyond the picturesqueness of certain photographs, we have chosen images that open up on multiple aspects of Moroccan society and its rich complexity : portraits of Tangier - Jewish woman, portraits of slaves ... -, monuments glass plaques, photographs of Studio Souissi, photographs by Nicolas Muller. Documentaries. As usual, we will change several photographs during the course of the exhibition.
We chose the title : “Photographic treasures” while thinking about the “Regards sur le monde” exhibition, Paris, 2000, organized by Laurent Gervereau and Pierre Fournier.
