During his stay in Morocco, of 1962 at 1970, as a pulmonologist, Charles Henneghien, passionate about photography and undoubtedly even more by the succession of exceptional moments that he and his wife Paulette experienced in contact with multiple destinies, riches, fragile, bearers of hope and often suffering, created a photo club in Oujda.

Charles Henneghien's Colorito seduces : its shimmering colors seem borrowed from Giorgione and Veronese, or closer to the quest for color inherent in photography, autochromes invented at the beginning of the 20th century^th century by the Lumière brothers. We are tempted to exhibit them next to the magnificent powdered colors of Chouanard, Roy, Chevalier, Passed, Gervais-Courtellemont especially, regularly shown at the Maison de la Photographie in Marrakech, and also photochromies which sublimate the images of the Orient under the acronym P.Z.

By creating the Maison de la Photographie in Marrakech, we wanted to collect the elements of an archive on Morocco, in Morocco. The Maison de la Photographie opened in 2009. We have since extensively illustrated Judaism in Morocco, edited catalogs, permanently show the diversity of Moroccan society and therefore, the presence of Judaism.

Thousands of visitors from all countries came, each looking according to their sensitivity, of its history, the elements of an emotional reading, aesthetic. We have participated in exhibitions outside the walls of the Maison : it was an opportunity for generous meetings.
We are pleased to show some of the photographs from our collection. We are sure that for many it will be a happy walk.

Michel Nachef is a photographer born in Lebanon in 1936. He lived in Morocco for 50 years. His career is based on the conservation of architectural and human heritage.

He then began a work on popular culture for years 1980, by photographing several moussems in various regions of Morocco, offering to the gaze a freedom opposed to Western stereotypes, on the consideration of the body and the celebrations. Thus influenced by American photography, such as Ansel Adams or Dorothea Lange, Michel Nachef deploys an emphatic vision of his adopted country seeking in the authentic, the means to sublimate the senses of the Moroccan subject.

The photographic archives of the Maison de la Photographie are a vibrant testimony to the immense presence of Moroccan women. Since the early years of photography in Morocco, towards 1860, until our days, the photographers highlighted the roles of women in society and also the diversity of personalities, adornments, songs and dances of which women are the mothers, protectors and essential actors.

A set of photographs show the diversity of Morocco illustrated by portraits of women. The "Women of Morocco" exhibition is shown at the Maison de la Photographie, at the Mouassine Museum and contributes to a better understanding of the Moroccan feminine genius.

The Maison de la Photographie celebrates its 10th anniversary with an exceptional selection of photographic prints from the years 1860 - the first photographs taken in Morocco – up to the years 1960.

Albumen papers from 1870, glass plates and autochromes, silver photographs illustrate the history of photography in a visited Morocco, traveled, by many photographers whose archives often bear witness to a Moroccan passion.

Charles Henneghien pulmonologist, photographer, lived in Morocco from 1962 at 1970 . His photographic work deeply emphasizes the proximity of the human relationship, the ability to highlight the universality of the human condition.

Charles and Paulette Henneghien contributed with a large donation to the enrichment of the collection of the Maison de la Photographie de Marrakech. The exhibition "Morocco at the dawn of modernity" installed at the Maison de la Photographie and at the Mouassine Museum shows a set of prints that bear the sensitivity of a life marked by Jaurès and Brel.

Amazigh culture has always aroused the interest of travelers. Explorers, writers, artistes, photographers, scientists, were impressed.

Morocco fascinates with its diversity : landscapes, populations, cultures. Morocco of thousand-year-old cities and countryside, Morocco deserts and mountains, mellahs and moussems, agadirs and zaouïas.
The archives of the Maison de la Photographie de Marrakech illustrate this diversity. Photographs and documentaries keep the landscapes close to us, the dances, architectures, the smiles of the people, the multiple works of educators, doctors, engineers, artists, that this passion has fed.
Looking at the magnificent portraits gathered here at the Amazigh Municipal Museum of Agadir, we are only opening the first page of immense passion.

Abderrazzak Benchaâbane was born in Marrakech in 1959. In 2009, during the opening of the Maison de la Photographie de Marrakech, he was the first Moroccan to present wishes for success, since the friendship was born. His photographic work is discreet.

We welcome him during the month of October, at the Maison de la Photographie with a series of titled photographs : ” A childhood in Marrakech “, black and white photographs.
On this occasion, Abderrazzak Benchaâbane has published a very nice catalog, ” A childhood in Marrakech “.

Martine Voyeux participated in the exhibition “The desire of Morocco” in 1999 at the Hôtel de Sully in Paris.
We welcome him to the Maison de la Photographie with a series of photographs titled: “The crossing from Tangier to Tiznit”.

Since 1860, Morocco amazes and inspires photographers. Landscapes, portraits, architectures, are the objects of their fascination.

The exhibition "The Morocco of Photographers" shows how much Morocco has declined modernity since 1860 nowadays. Original photographs, albumen papers, glass plates, autochromes, silver papers, show the photographic wealth in Morocco.
The poster photograph was taken by Jean Besancenot, in 1939.
An important set of photographs by Didier Madras, who was Lyautey's secretary from 1921 at 1934 and author of several books on Morocco is shown in this exhibition.

Abdelay Mellakh est né en 1947 in the Mouassine district, in the old family house now transformed into the Mouassine Museum. It was in this house that he also had his first workshop, nourishes the striking influences of the neighborhood and its profusion of colors. The germination of a work found there all its essences.

Marrakech was already a cosmopolitan city, traveled by the Rolling Stones, Moustaki, Roland Barthes and Nicolas de Staël. In Morocco, the publishers of the review Souffles marked an era. In his workshop Abdelhay Mellak had gathered good company : Picasso photos, Bob Dylan, de Dali, the novels of Camus. In this same derb Abdullah Ibrahim also took his first steps.
L’exposition «Mellakh, the magic of the places ”that we present is a multiple celebration: a house, a district, a painter. The paintings of the years 1970 exhibited evoke the matrix of a work. The birth of the themes dear to the painter, the emergence of symbols that weave together the work and its environment are illustrated.
A great painter of Moroccan artistic life was born here, in the heart of Mouassine, and now participates in the metamorphosis of a venerable family home into a place of art.

The Maison de la Photographie in Marrakech participated again this year in the readings of the Trasatlantica portfolios. The winner is Dounia Fikri.
In partnership with the French Institute of Essaouira du 17 November to 15 December 2017 and the Cervantes Institute in Casablanca.

In the village of Aglou, in the south of Morocco, a tradition wants that the young men of the village dress in sacrificial fresh skins of the sheep of "Aid El Adha" and this during three days of festivities. Their costumes thus give them complete freedom in a predominantly conservative community., where individual freedoms are very limited. For this series, Dounia Fikri took the liberty of altering the film used by different natural processes, for the purpose of visually documenting an experience related to the loss and restoration of vision.
On this occasion Les Editions Limitées is publishing the number 1 from the Cahier Jeune Photographie au Maroc series.

The Cervantes Institute in Casablanca welcomes a set of portraits from the collection of the Maison de la Photographie in Marrakech.
The nascent ethnography and exoticism are still mixed in a "Moroccan fascination".

"Morocco memory of the earth", was the title of a remarkable exhibition at the Museum of Natural History in Paris 1999, dedicated to the memory of His Majesty Hassan II. Perhaps this theme guided the organization of this exhibition at the Faculty of Sciences in Marrakech. The happy initiative of Dr.. Khalid Rkha Chaham and his colleagues make this exhibition. The photographs of Vincent Delotte constitute real heritage and iconographic campaigns.

Limousin man, man also from the Moroccan highlands, the senses of the terroir constitute the framework of an important photographic work.

This work is important because, beyond the common thread born of deep empathy, of deep generosity, the gaze constructs categories, community poetry that describes the activities, the chores, the deep ties that weave societies.
These are still traditional and predominantly rural societies : lives of sowing, lambing noises, bees and markets. The faces, say much more than portraits, they say the links formed in the heart of families, clans, tribes, Exchanges. So, there are also the portraits. Beyond the infinite diversity of beings, places, even time, Vincent Delotte is in a permanent quest, never satisfied, of his contemporaries. He tears from existential time seconds to eternity and builds a proposition of deep joy, carrier in itself of another version of eternity : the one we feel in a poetic journey, honest about the human condition.
We therefore discussed the articulation between the portrait and the human. What confidence is at the base of this feed, of this booty of images almost jealously collected by Vincent Delotte ?
So the men are photographed, the children, but ... women !

The Maison de la Photographie and the Mouassine museum in partnership with the Delegation of the Ministry of Culture and Communication are organizing the exhibition “Splendeurs Saadiennes” at the Badii palace..

This exhibition is illustrated with photographs by Xavier Salmon, author of the book "Marrakech, saadian splendors 1550-1650 » and presents rare lapidary elements from the palace: column capitals, zelliges.

The Maison de la Photographie and the Mouassine museum in partnership with the Delegation of the Ministry of Culture and Communication are organizing the exhibition "Le mellah de Marrakech" at the Badii palace.

This exhibition shows through 20th century photographs various aspects of the life of the mellah. We thank the Alliance Israélite Universelle de Paris and Paul Dahan for the participation of their archives. The work of Zédé Schulmann is still too unknown, Elias Harrus, E. Zurita, Walter Mitelholzer and Leo Wehrli. It is a mellah animated by its inhabitants that is shown.

The variety of landscapes, the hospitality of its people, the light, are characteristics of Morocco. The photographers who since 1860 visit Morocco, have made extraordinary images. First in Tangier and Tetouan, then from the beginning of the 20th century throughout Morocco, Did, Marrakech, the Atlas, the great south. Magnificent portraits, landscapes constitute an exceptional set of images.

The collection of the Maison de la Photographie aims to show the passion aroused by Morocco and highlight a heritage, a story, which are among the treasures of humanity.
The exhibition “Morocco, land of light” selects original photographs taken by European and Moroccan photographers. In Arabic photography translates to “draw with light”. What better translation reveals the fragile photographic documents? ?
The exhibited photographs are part of the archives of the Maison de la Photographie de Marrakech.

The Saadian tombs are located north of the Almohad qasba in Marrakech. This sumptuous funeral complex was restored in 1917 by the Department of Fine Arts and Historical Monuments.

The main access to this necropolis of the Saadian royal family communicated with the neighboring mosque founded by Yaaqub al-Mansur. Since 1917 a new entrance has been fitted out in the southwest flank which leads to an open-air space occupied by a cemetery and a garden bounded on the east and south by an interior wall flanked by towers.
The nucleus of this necropolis was erected by the sultanAbdallah Al-ghalib in 1557 to shelter his father's graveMuhammad Shaykh founder of the Saadian dynasty. Later, the sultanAhmad Al-mansur Dahbi (1578-1603) carried out works of enlargement and embellishment of this necropolis following the example of the Mamlouk of Egypt;  to welcome his own remains and those of various members of his family including his mother Lalla Massouda.
The necropolis consists of two architectural ensembles: the first is divided into three rooms. It opens onto an oratory with three naves in which tombs have been added from the 18th century. A mihrab traces a pentagonal niche topped with a pointed horseshoe arch which rests on four half columns of gray marble framed by four other similar columns and surmounted by a cupola with muqarnas.

Since its foundation in the XI^th century by the Almoravids, Marrakech benefited from an ingenious water supply system. It is a system made up of khettaras, underground drains that conveyed water from its sources to socio-collective facilities such as fountains, public baths, the latrines, mosques, etc.. Thereafter, the progress and development of hydraulic techniques made in this area under the Almohads (XII^th women under a pergola) allowed the creation of large water basins intended for, among others, to the irrigation of huge gardens and orchards, like those of Aguedal or Menara.
Since, the hydraulic system put in place was constantly improved and maintained by the reigning dynasties until the beginning of the 20th century^th women under a pergola. So, thanks to the abundance of its waters and the landscaping and agricultural know-how of its inhabitants, Marrakech, despite the aridity of its environment, became a garden city and a verdant oasis that fascinated and still fascinates the visitor.
The photographs presented in this exhibition date mainly from the years 1920 and allow to realize an important part of the rich heritage of Marrakech.

In spring and summer 1995, from Meknes to Marrakech, Moulay Brahim and Tameslouth, the writer and filmmaker Pierre Guicheney, ethnologist Viviana Easter and photographer Jean-Luc Manaud produce for Géo Magazine a report on Gnawa and Aïssawa rituals and pilgrimages. Jean-Luc Manaud will bring back rare images from this immersion in the heart of the two brotherhoods, exceptional. A completely new exhibition in the form of a tribute to Jean-Luc who passed away on 28 February 2015.
Pierre Guicheney's documentary "Le bal des genies" (1998) will be screened during the exhibition.

In 1980, Alberto Rainolter photographed the graffiti on the large wall of Essaouira beach.
The same year, he discovered the gnaoua on the place of Marrakech, and since 35 years he brings together a whole musical and photographic memory.

TheKittab al-Istibsar, at 12^th women under a pergola, describes “Marrakech is the city of the Maghreb where one finds the most gardens and orchards, where we find the most grapes, fruits and fruit trees of all kinds… It is the olive tree which mainly dominates”.

It is generally thought that the builders of khettaras came from the Saharan oases and that stones thrown here and there more or less spontaneously produced the palm grove of Marrakech., where the quality of the soil and the proximity of the aquifer allows them to develop. This is why the palm grove of Marrakech is a bit of a living legend, miraculous.
The palm grove is today weakened: water scarcity, lack of maintenance, l’urbanisation massive, deal fatal blows to one of the jewels of Marrakech.

In 1936, Denise Bellon, Pierre Boucher, René Zuber, organized a summer trip to Morocco, probably influenced by the stories and photographs of Pierre Verger who returned from a trip to Africa where he had traveled through Sudan, Dahomey, and Togo, Niger. Pierre Verger, also in charge of the photography laboratory at the Ethnography Museum, was also part of the Alliance Photo group and her photos were marketed by Maria Eisner.(2)
A tremendous spirit of freedom animated this group of friends, who wanted to live their life like a Dionysian party, celebrating the beauty of bodies, nature and naturism, happy moments, hiking along the rivers of France, camping, ski, but also, sensitive to a freedom they associated with modernity, they photographed the means of transport, with close-ups of the locomotives, airplanes, architectures. They seem to be constantly shared by a desire to "life to catch up", as André Breton put it.(3)
Charismatic personality, René Zuber stayed in Leipzig, in Germany, Marked by the book by Albert Renger -Patzsch "Die Welt Ist Schön" -the world is beautiful -.

In 2014, in partnership with the Arles festival – The Baux de Provence, we had organized the exhibition '' Morocco multiple land of sharing '', and the projection of 40 Moroccan portraits in the Carrières de Lumière at Baux de Provence.

This same exhibition is installed from the 24 April 2016 at “the cannery”, new exhibition space for the Marrakech Biennale.

True to our historical approach, the exhibition "Morocco, the eternal and the ephemeral ", maintains a chronological presentation and shows original prints.

The 19th century, with beautiful original photographs, rare portraits by James Valentine, and urban scenes of Tangier. The beginning of the 20th century, with photographs of Félix and Flandrin. For the first time in Morocco, we present the photographers of Alliance Photo, works of Denise Bellon, Pierre Boucher, René Zuber, made in 1935-1936. Nicolas Muller is still featured, with the works of Tangier for years 1940. At last, documentary film screening : "The Berbers of the High Atlas" 1957 by Daniel Chicault, "The Gnawa", the Jacques Willemont…
" Morocco, the eternal and the ephemeral ", thus shows the exceptional heritage of Mémoire, manifests a deep relationship with a beloved country.

The exhibition presented on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the inscription of Marrakech in the heritage of Unesco, within the walls of the Ben Youssef Madrasah, presents a set of photographic prints on the Marrakech Madrasah and other Moroccan Madrasahs.

Morocco occupies a place of predilection in the emotional and artistic life of Jean Pierre Evrard.
This is during a visit to Marrakech, at the House of Photography, that we talked about the importance of building a photographic archive, "A memory for the future".

Jean Pierre Evrard decided to make a donation, generous gesture very significant for the present and the future. The current exhibition, selection of some magnificent prints of photographs taken during several trips, of 1995 until now, evokes with sensitivity the symbiosis between light and generosity, the perception of an extremely thin filter between the viewing eye, which moves and Morocco in its infinite diversity.
