Gillet Gabriel

Unknown dates

First operator for the Army Cinematographic Service during the Protectorate, Gabriel Gillet documented numerous official events in Morocco between April 1943 and July 1946. He notably accompanied the Resident General Gabriel Puaux during his travels in the Drâa-Tafilalet region.. It was undoubtedly during these trips to the south that Gillet began to show a more personal interest in the populations and cultures he encountered.. Some photographs, particularly portraits of women preserved in the Jacques Belin funds of the Residence collection, reveal a particular attention paid to dances, local costumes and adornments. Gillet's interest in Amazigh collective festivals will be confirmed later, with his participation in the film Berber dances produced by the Moroccan Cinematographic Center, then by the publication of Suite of Berber dances (Rabat, Éditions Studios du Souissi, 1951), an illustrated album of his photographs taken from the film. Gillet also collaborated with Jacques Belin for the photographic illustration of the book. Morocco, directed by Ahmed Sefrioui (Paris, Hachette, 1956).
Based in Rabat, the commercial distribution of his photos is ensured by the Souissi studios. Gillet also published certain views in the form of postcards bearing the words “Photos Éditions G. Gillet, Rabat », among which is a series entitled Artistic Morocco.
