Cavilla Antonio

Unknown dates

Tanger. Gibraltar administrative records mention a Cavilla in Governor Street, in Gibraltar, in 1864. With this name is associated a studio "Cavilla y Brunzon". The Chipulina Family Archives, established in Gibraltar, contain several photographs of Gibraltar and Tangier.
Later, photographs attributed to Cavilla and Molinari appear in the illustrated press, dont «The Spanish and American Illustration».
Cavilla opened a studio in the busy Legation Quarter, some tourists, the Small Souk, near the Hôtel des Gourmets. Many photographs were purchased by the Spanish Legation, but also by the British consulate, whose archives mention several albumen photographs with stamp on the back. He also painted portraits of travelers including that of Antonio Amatler, family portraits. An album of 16 photographies, under the title "Tangier Views" was published in the years 1880, with English text.
His work can be approached in various ways : studio photos, whose repetitive elements integrate a vegetal decor, interiors, rocks, photographs of urban or rural landscapes : views of the Spartel lighthouse, urban views : in that case, the often very wide angles do not individualize the subjects, but the photographer is obviously attracted to the gatherings, the crowd gathered for a parade of personalities or a parade accompanying a religious event. Female models are relatively numerous, with a whole range of beautiful portraits, women in their interior, theatrical tea ceremony, of the mistress and her maid ... portraits of women in costume, probably unique representation of an "odalisque", portraits of men are rare.
