Mulay ‘Abdallah al Ghalib was one of the Saadian rulers who embellished their capital Marrakech in the 16th century with many buildings. He was thus the sponsor of the medersa Ibn Yusuf. Place of education and residence for students (tolba), the monument had to equal those that the Meridin sultans had raised in Fez, in Méknès or even in Salé. The great medersa of Marrakech today stands out as a masterpiece of architectural harmony where the decor declines the ornament in such multiple combinations that the eye cannot tire.
