Son of photographer Jean César Neurdein, known by the pseudonym Charlet, the two brothers opened a postcard publishing establishment in Paris in 1863. Towards the years 1870, they embarked on ethnographic clichés of African countries, including Morocco.
Each had a defined role, Antonin brought back pictures of landscapes and buildings from his travels, while Etienne took care of the administration and the portraits. They gained international fame in particular thanks to their extremely prolific work (more than 40 000 photographies), and their photographs of the Paris Universal Exhibitions in 1889 and 1900.
In 1913, the establishment was bought by the printer Emile Crété, who took over the Lévys business and the two houses merged under the label : « Lévy &Neurdein ». In 1932, the company took the name of "CAP company of photomechanical arts", located 44 rue Leteillier in Paris.
